Hurricane Analysis And Forecasting System (HAFS)

HAFS is NOAA’s new state-of-the-art high-resolution coupled atmosphere-ocean-wave model suitable for tropical cyclone (TC) research and forecasting in all global tropical ocean basins. To facilitate the training of scientists working on tropical cyclones, a Colloquium and Training Workshop on HAFS is organised by NCMRWF in collaboration with India Meteorological Department and NOAA’s Environmental Modeling Center.

Goals of the Colloquium

1. Lectures on all aspects of HAFS, including infrastructure, model physics and dynamics, nesting, initialization, coupling with the ocean, post-processing, and vortex tracking.
2. HAFS’s multiple configurations, TC verification, and HAFS ensemble system.
3. Practical sessions will give tutorial participants hands-on experience in running HAFS.

This event will be held at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida, India. Jointly organized by NCMRWF, India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), NOAA this colloquium will feature presentations and tutorials by the main HAFS developers. This event is also expected to set the stage for disseminating HAFS to the broader community in the near future.
